This is a speculative lunar calendar, in the form of strings of beads. Their wisdom may have been lost with the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and traditionalists using the Moon as their calendar were ridiculed as ‘lunatics’.
Ideally, your lunatic beads should hang on 1, 2 or 4 hooks, somewhere the Moon is visible – perhaps beside a door or window. If on a south-facing wall, each night you move one bead on the long string from East to West.
Each time the New Moon bead reaches the top, also move one bead on the short string to show a new lunar month.
Yule is a special time of midwinter when the calendar resets. As the Sky Disk bead nears the top, a traditional party and procedure (the subject of other pages of this site) decides if the upcoming year needs an extra lunar leap-month. If so, the High Diddle Diddle bead shows where it will be inserted.
